Installers in brick-and-concrete countries run conduit across walls because they have no choice. In British Columbia, we almost always do have a choice, and it changes everything about how a security system should look: which is to say, invisible. The wood-frame construction that's nearly universal here — attics above, basements or crawl spaces below, hollow stud walls between — gives cable a private road network through the whole house. A camera, keypad or doorbell can appear on a wall with no visible wire anywhere, in a hundred-year-old character home or a Langford new build alike. Here's why, and how the work is actually done.

Compare that with the masonry construction common across much of the world, where every cable run means surface conduit or chased brick, and you understand why installs here can be genuinely invisible rather than merely tidy.
The practical consequence: in a wood-frame home there is almost always a concealed route from the equipment location to any point on any wall or soffit. The question is never whether a clean route exists — it's which of several routes is fastest, and that's a judgment that comes from having fished a few hundred Island walls.
The attic serves the upper floor and the exterior: cable crosses the attic floor, drops down interior walls to keypads and contacts, and exits through soffits to cameras under the eaves — the best camera position on the wet coast anyway, since it's sheltered from rain. One attic run can feed every camera on the house without a centimetre of cable showing outside.
The basement or crawl space serves the main floor the same way from below: up through the wall's bottom plate to outlets, door contacts and wall-mounted equipment. Older Victoria homes with unfinished basements are particularly quick, with the joists exposed and every wall's underside accessible. Between the two highways, the only genuinely awkward territory is a wall with blocking mid-cavity or an insulated exterior wall — and both have standard solutions.
Getting cable through a closed wall without opening it is called fishing, and it's the difference between a retrofit that looks factory-built and one that looks bolted on. The tools are simple — fibreglass rods, pull chains, right-angle drills — but the skill is knowing what's inside the wall before drilling: where the studs, blocking, plumbing and existing wiring run, learned from the attic and basement views of the same wall.
A fished install leaves one small, exact hole where the device sits, and nothing else. No conduit, no surface-run cable stapled along baseboards, no cable moulding pretending to be trim. In Victoria's character homes this is more than aesthetics — original plaster, siding and trim deserve not to carry hardware, and wood-frame construction means they never have to.
Honesty about the hard cases: fully finished basements remove the underfloor highway, vaulted ceilings remove parts of the attic, and mid-century homes sometimes hide horizontal blocking in unexpected places. None of these stop a clean install; they change the route. Closets, mechanical rooms and stacked cabinetry provide vertical paths between floors, and the occasional small drywall opening — cut cleanly and patched properly — beats a visible cable for the life of the house.
This is also where hybrid design earns its keep. If one sensor position is genuinely unreachable without disproportionate work, a quality wireless sensor covers it while everything reachable stays wired. The goal is a system that's overwhelmingly hard-wired — for reliability and zero battery maintenance — with wireless used deliberately, not as the default because fishing walls was too much effort.
A house at the open-stud stage is the cheapest security install it will ever have. Pre-wiring means running cable to camera positions under the eaves, door and window contact locations, keypad positions, the doorbell, and a structured spot for the recorder and panel — before insulation and drywall close it all in. The labour is a fraction of the retrofit equivalent, and the result is perfect: every device fed invisibly from day one.
For anyone building in Langford, Colwood or on an infill lot, the pre-wire conversation belongs at the framing stage, alongside electrical rough-in. Even owners who don't want a full system immediately can rough-in the cable for near-nothing and add equipment later. Conduit to key positions — or at minimum, cable in the walls — is the cheapest insurance a new build can buy against ever needing a visible wire.
