The small stuff that causes big problems: webs, film and IR

The most common camera complaints on the Island have humble causes. Spider webs strung in front of a lens catch IR light at night and produce glowing streaks and endless motion alerts — spiders are drawn to the warmth and the insects around the IR glow, so this is a recurring seasonal fact, not a one-time fix. Salt-air film and general grime build on lenses and domes gradually enough that owners don't notice the image softening until it's cleaned.

Servicing handles both properly: lenses and domes cleaned with the right materials (a dry rag scratches dome polycarbonate and makes night glare permanently worse), webs cleared and deterred at mounting points, and night image quality actually reviewed — because a camera that looks fine at noon can be nearly blind at midnight, and midnight is when it's needed.

Batteries and storage: the silent failures

Backup batteries in alarm panels, detectors and wireless sensors age whether used or not, and a battery's label voltage says nothing about what it holds under load.
